Charlie Yates is a Scottish artist based in Glasgow and Edinburgh. Graduating from The Glasgow School of Art in 2019, Yates has been able to continue to paint throughout all the lockdowns and has produced this extensive body of work that comprises ‘Breathe’, his first major solo show. Yates’ work is informed by sketches, photographs and recordings both of a written and of a verbal nature. These observations are combined with recalled experiences from his family, memories and photographs reaching back into the 1950s, through the 70s and up to the present day. Already his work has reached critical acclaim from The Open Eye Gallery in Edinburgh and he’s been noted as someone to look out for.

Yates’ practice of continually interrogating the material and images often results in undetermined scenes. This, offset with the use of a limited palette, makes for a series of atmospheric and nostalgic interpretations of fond experiences. The sense of travel and the different light of foreign locations, something that is very much a memory or a fantasy to most people at the moment, is additionally poignant at this time of limited movement and travel and unrest in the world; evoking memories of hitherto.
